Lead Story
Public safety takes the lead: new joint training center and emergency shelter
Sumter County has opened its new Joint Training Facility and Emergency Shelter at the Gloria Rowe Hayward Sumter County Service Center campus. The county says the 25,444-square-foot facility is built for joint training between Sumter County Fire & EMS and The Villages Public Safety Department, while also serving as a pet-friendly storm shelter during local emergencies.
Why it matters: The shelter is designed for about 672 general-population residents and about 237 residents with special needs. County officials also say it should reduce the need to use schools as shelters during storms.
This Friday
Free June 26 event: America 250 Joint Fire Training Demonstration
The public can see the new facility in action on Friday, June 26, 2026, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Sumter County Joint Training Center. The schedule includes a Benjamin Franklin-themed fire history activity from 4 to 5 p.m., touch-a-truck and junior firefighter stations from 5 to 6 p.m., and a live joint training demonstration from 6 to 7 p.m.
Why it matters: It gives families a free look at the equipment, people, and planning behind local emergency response.
Resident Alert
District warning: utility refund scam calls reported
The Villages Community Development Districts are warning residents about callers claiming to offer utility or irrigation billing refunds. District staff say residents should not click links, open attachments, or provide personal, financial, or account information because of an unexpected phone call.
What to do: If a call feels questionable, hang up and contact the organization directly using a published phone number.
Families
Charter School parent workshop set for Saturday, June 27
The Villages Charter School and Buffalo HERD list a final summer parent workshop for Saturday, June 27, 2026, from 8 to 10 a.m. The Middleton listing places it at The Tracy. Families should also check the school hot-topics page for the broader summer schedule and any updates before heading out.
Middleton Growth
Downtown business momentum and new open-house listings
Middleton’s official M News feed is highlighting new downtown business momentum, including Mainstream Boutique and Haru Japanese Restaurant. It also posted a June 16 open-house update with multiple new and pre-owned home showings listed around the community.
The practical takeaway: Downtown Middleton continues to fill in, and the official open-house page remains the best place for residents and future neighbors to track available homes and directions to the Welcome Home Center.
