Saturday, Nov. 7 — Sumter County Public Works hosts its next free Amnesty Day for household hazardous waste and electronics from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lake Okahumpka Park, 6085 E. State Road 44 in Wildwood — a short hop from Middleton.
The drop-off is funded through property taxes, so there is no extra charge at the gate. It’s a practical way to clear paint cans, old electronics, and garage chemicals before the holidays without tossing them in regular trash.
What to bring
- Automotive fluids and batteries
- Herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, fungicides
- Propane tanks up to 25 pounds
- Cleaners, solvents, paint removers and thinners
- Latex and oil-based paints
- Household electronics (TVs, computers, and similar)
- Rechargeable household batteries, fluorescent lamps, smoke detectors, pool chemicals, wood preservatives, and old gas/gas cans
What not to bring
- Biological or infectious waste
- Explosives
- Radioactive waste
- Empty paint cans
- Tires
Pack tips from the county: don’t mix chemicals; keep products in original labeled containers when you can; box items so nothing breaks; bag leaky containers in clear plastic; keep loads in the trunk away from passengers.

Clearing out a garage this weekend? Drop a comment with what you’re hauling — paint, TVs, or something weirder — and help neighbors know it’s worth the trip.
