Memorial Day weekend is almost here, and around Middleton that means two things at once: a moment to slow down and remember those who gave everything for the country, and the unofficial start of summer for families, neighbors, and visiting grandkids.

If you are planning the long weekend, here are a few easy local ideas to keep on your radar.

Start with the reason for the day

Memorial Day is Monday, May 25, 2026. The Villages District notice encourages residents to use the day as a time of remembrance and reflection, including a visit to Veterans Memorial Park near Spanish Springs for anyone who wants a quiet place to pay respects.

There is also a Memorial Day ceremony listed for Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 25. The cemetery is at 6502 SW 102nd Ave., Bushnell. If you go, plan for heat, bring a chair, and check the latest details before heading out in case weather changes the schedule.

Kick off summer in Middleton

The weekend starts early with Middleton’s Kick Off to Summer / Middleton Mingle on Saturday, May 23 from 5 to 8 p.m. It is a natural pick for families who want games, entertainment, and a reason to get out of the house before school fully gives way to summer mode.

Make it simple: grab dinner nearby, bring water, and let the kids burn off the end-of-school energy while neighbors catch up.

Low-stress weekend ideas

Do a park morning. Go early before the afternoon heat settles in.

Plan a backyard cookout. Keep it easy: hot dogs, burgers, fruit, and a cooler of drinks.

Take a golf cart cruise. Sunset is the sweet spot once the day cools down.

Check the town square entertainment calendars. The Villages usually has plenty of live music nearby.

Try Middleton Rocks. Paint, hide, or hunt for a rock and turn a simple walk into a neighborhood treasure hunt.

Holiday service notes

District Customer Service Centers and Administrative Offices are scheduled to be closed Monday, May 25, and regular hours resume Tuesday, May 26 unless otherwise noted. The District says sanitation schedules vary by area: many VCDD areas have no change, while some Lake County and Lady Lake portions shift. If pickup matters at your house, check the District notice or call District Customer Service at 352-753-4508.

Middleton Rocks is LIVE! A neighborhood treasure hunt where you paint rocks, hide them around Middleton, and track their journey as neighbors find them.

How it works: 1. Paint a rock with any design you like -- get creative with colors, patterns, or inspirational messages. Use acrylic paint and seal it with clear coat so it survives the Florida weather.

2. Register your rock at hellomiddleton.com/rocks to get an official MR-ID number. Write the ID and the URL on the back of your rock so finders know where to log it.

3. Hide it somewhere fun in the neighborhood -- park benches, trail markers, playgrounds, near the town squares. Anywhere public and safe where someone might stumble upon it.

4. Find a rock? Log your find on the site with a photo, and choose to re-hide it for the next person or keep it for yourself. Either way, you earn points!

Every rock gets its own journey page with a QR code, a timeline showing everywhere it has been, and a photo gallery of every finder. Watch your painted rock travel across Middleton!

-- Find a rock: +5 points
-- Re-hide a rock: +3 points
-- Upload a photo with your find: +2 bonus
